SHAUN FOSTER

opening words

“The game didn’t go the way we wanted. But there were a couple of bright spots. We were able to run the ball a little better in the second half. I thought my defense played pretty well tonight, facing a powerful offense like we did. We just didn’t execute the way we wanted to, offensively, to try to help our defense. We keep putting them out there and if you keep putting them on the field they’ll wear out a little bit. But other than that, I’m glad my players kept fighting and we didn’t have guys who gave up.”

on quarterback Ethan Garbers staying in the game despite some quarterback pressure

“Well, if you know Ethan, you know he was fighting to stay out there. So when you have a player who begs you to stay and wants to keep playing, you let him play.”

on some of the positives you can take advantage of as UCLA prepares for Penn State next week

“Look at yourself with a positive question. We just have to go to Penn State and continue to build on this. That’s all we have to do. Like I said, we will learn from these losses. I know I see it. I know everyone sees it, but some choose not to. But they are improving and we will continue to improve and work hard. And eventually, everything will change.”

on quarterback Ethan Garbers who threw six interceptions and three touchdowns this season

“The guys in front have to protect him and prevent him from being hit and falling to the ground. It’s hard to play quarterback when you’re not upright. He’s a tough guy. He’s trying to find ways to make plays. “It’s just unfortunate what’s happening, but I’ll ride with Ethan no matter what.”

on the team’s defense against Oregon

“The defense played well. But we didn’t do enough offensively to help them. And like I said, with an offense as powerful as that, they’re going to be able to make some plays. I’m glad my guys on defense keep fighting. “They are tough guys.”

on the Bruins defense that has not had a sack in the last three games

“We had some pressures there. Cherif (Seye) came in and touched a ball. But you know, coming off of last season when you have a first rounder, there’s going to be an obvious difference. He (Laiatu Latu) continues to do exactly the same thing for the Colts. It is difficult to replace a player of his caliber. As long as we can make efforts, we will eventually see how it changes.”

on linebacker Carson Schwesinger finishing as the team’s leading tackler

“Just play with a certain type of mentality. He is a former substitute, so these types of players tend to be real workers. You probably haven’t noticed, but he’s been injured most of this season so far. And he’s still out there making plays. Play hard no matter what. “I’m glad he’s on our side.”

about your team’s mentality at the moment

“I mean, they should be down. No one should be emotional about what happened. The fact that they’re still playing, the score is a little lopsided, and they’re still playing hard, that just shows their character. We have some good guys. “Over time this will change.”
