The city of Winnipeg Beach is left without a leader after its mayor resigned Wednesday night.

“I have been put in the untenable position of having to choose between my health or continuing my duties for this city,” Mayor Pam Jackson said Wednesday night in a message to the council. “After much thought and with deep sadness, I am resigning as mayor effective immediately.”

Jackson told the board he had developed a medical problem — a herniated disk — that required strong medication and reduced activity to manage the pain. That included not being able to sit for more than 15 minutes.

She said her health care providers recommended that she take some time off to heal.

“I requested a medical leave at our last council meeting. However, three members of this council voted to deny this request,” Jackson said.

“I have loved my time working with this community. I want to thank you for giving me the honor and privilege of working for you.”

Jackson is then seen leaving his chair at the council table.

This is a developing story. More to come soon.
