Weather and storms could postpone the game in Atlanta

Rain and thunderstorms in the Atlanta area have put the final two games of the Mets-Braves series at Truist Park in doubt.

With rain moving across Georgia and Hurricane Helene approaching the Southeast over the next few days, Major League Baseball is reportedly determined to try to play the second game of the series at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday.

What is the weather forecast for Atlanta?

According to Accuweather, there is an 82 percent chance of rain at game time, with windows of less than 50 percent at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

What is the path of Hurricane Helene?

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene is expected to reach the Atlanta area Thursday and Friday, further complicating the situation for Thursday’s series finale.

Where do the Mets stand in the NL wild-card race?

The Mets enter Game 2 of the series with a one-game lead over the Braves, who are a half-game behind the Diamondbacks in the race for the final NL wild-card spot. On Wednesday, Mets left-hander David Peterson (9-3, 3.08) is scheduled to face NL Cy Young favorite Chris Sale (18-3, 2.38) of the Braves.

With the NL wild-card playoffs set to begin Tuesday, Oct. 1, the only potential date to make up rained-out games would be Monday, Sept. 30. If the results of any postponed games are needed for playoff seeding, they could be made up on that day.

After Atlanta, the Mets are scheduled to travel to Milwaukee for their final three games of the season against the NL Central champion Brewers. The Braves will remain at home for a three-game series against the Royals.

After completing a series with the Giants on Wednesday, the Diamondbacks will host the Padres for three games beginning Friday. There is no possibility of weather-related postponements in that game on the indoor diamond at Chase Field.
