Justin Herbert has a sprained ankle and is unsure if he will play on Sunday

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has a sprained ankle that could keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Herbert told reporters today that he has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, but he does not know what his playing status will be.

The ankle “isn’t great,” but it has felt better every day this week, Herbert said.

Herbert said he’s glad it’s still Friday and it’s too early to say whether he’ll be able to play in 48 hours.

Herbert suffered an ankle injury Sunday against the Panthers and remained in the game, but he missed practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday.

The Chargers have had a run-centric offensive game plan in their first two games under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, but Herbert has played well when they’ve needed him, completing 67.4 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and one interception while taking just two sacks.

The Chargers, at 2-0, are 1.5-point underdogs to Pittsburgh, at 2-0.
