Malayalam actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma in hospital, serious

Kochi: Kaviyoor Ponnamma, the beloved screen mother of Malayalam cinema, is in a critical condition, according to sources in the film industry.

The 75-year-old actress has been admitted to a private hospital in Kochi due to age-related health issues. She has been battling these complications for some time now, which has led to a gradual deterioration in her health.

A celebrated figure of Malay cinema, Ponnamma has appeared in over 700 films since her debut in the late 1950s. She initially began her acting career in Malay dramas, and quickly transitioned to the big screen, where she became the go-to actress for the roles of mother and grandmother.

She has played the role of mother to legendary actors like Sathyan and Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and many others. Her on-screen chemistry with Mohanlal, in particular, has been appreciated by the audiences.

In 2022, Ponnamma made her last on-screen appearance before her health started deteriorating. Since then, she has mostly remained at home due to her illness. In recent weeks, her condition has worsened and she has been confined to a hospital bed. Her condition is currently described as critical.

Ponnamma’s husband passed away in 2011 and she has a daughter who resides in the US. Despite rumours circulating last year that the actress had been abandoned by her family, Ponnamma denied these claims and said she was living with her younger brother.
